Facing an Unplanned Pregnancy

Facing an Unplanned Pregnancy

You just took a pregnancy test and it’s positive, NOW WHAT?  Understandably, you have a ton of emotions with a lot of questions going through your mind and it can be very overwhelming. How will you tell others in your life and what will they say? You may feel like you failed many important people in your life, like family, boyfriend, even yourself! You may feel lost or shocked or confused and don’t know what to do. Take a deep breath and let’s walk through what your next steps.

STEP 1: CONFIRM YOUR PREGNANCY WITH A DOCTOR!

Scheduling with your doctor as soon as possible is best, whether your pregnancy is planned or unplanned. Your doctor can answer many questions for you and early prenatal care is best for you and your baby. Here are just a few things your doctor can help you with:

  • Confirm your pregnancy.
  • Determine how far along you are. Based upon that information, your doctor will help you determine what your next steps will be in your prenatal care.
  • Give you resources to help have the healthiest pregnancy possible.

Your doctor will answer questions you have about pregnancy, childbirth and assist with additional resources you may need during your pregnancy and play an important role in this time in your life.  If you need help in locating a doctor or clinic in your area for access to prenatal care, Cradle of Hope can help.  All you have to do is reach out to us.

STEP 2: WORK THROUGH YOUR EMOTIONS

Many emotions can flood your mind when you learn that you are pregnant. It’s important to work through those feelings and understand that what you are feeling is not uncommon.  You may feel overwhelmed, shocked and at a loss about what to do, but be excited about the gift of life. Or you may feel indifferent and not connected to your pregnancy. Every woman goes through this differently, and there is no wrong or right way to feel.

STEP 3: LEARN YOUR OPTIONS

Many people will give you their opinion about what you should do and how you should do it. But ultimately, the decision is yours! You can make the right choice for you and your baby. In order to do that, it is important to be informed of your different options. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO FACE IT ALONE!  Cradle of Hope is a great place to start.  We will give you tools, guidance, support and resources so that you can feel good about whatever decision you make for you and your baby. WE ARE NOT HERE TO TELL YOU WHAT CHOICE TO MAKE! Because every woman’s circumstance is unique regarding unplanned pregnancy, it is important to talk with a professional team that can give you the best quality of care, resources and assistance tailored to your specific needs.

STEP 4: FRAMEWORK FOR YOUR SUPPORT SYSTEM

Building your support system for your unplanned pregnancy is vital! Who you share that information with is completely up to you. Many women, when facing an unplanned pregnancy, will wait until they’ve made a decision about their plan for their pregnancy going forward before they share that they are even pregnant, and that is completely understandable as you want to have clarity and all your questions explored and answered. Telling your family and the important people in your life can be a bit intimidating and overwhelming. Keep in mind that if you choose to keep your unplanned pregnancy a secret, you can lose out on indispensable support from those closest to you. Only you know if the people in your life will be a good support to you or not. If those people are safe and love you, they can provide tremendous support at this time in your life. Cradle of Hope can help you think through the important people in your life and give you resources to help with these important conversations.
